There are worse places to become entangled in a mystery than Positano.
The scenery is magnificent, the cafés are plentiful and even the staircases seem determined to provide a dramatic entrance. Unfortunately, none of those things guarantee a peaceful holiday.
The Pink Door of Positano is the first book in my Doorway Series, a collection of lighthearted historical mysteries filled with travel, wit, romance and just enough trouble to make an otherwise sensible itinerary completely useless.
Meet Lulu Penrose
The story begins in 1953 with Louisa “Lulu” Penrose, a young Englishwoman from Cornwall who travels to Positano and stays with her aunt, the elegant and socially accomplished Mrs. Dalrymple.
Mrs. Dalrymple lives in a beautiful Italian villa distinguished by its pink door. The door itself is not secret, magical or hidden.
What waits around it, however, is another matter.
Lulu expects sunshine, rest and a welcome change from her life in England. Instead, a series of encounters introduces her to intriguing new acquaintances, unanswered questions and the uncomfortable suspicion that something is not quite right.
Among those acquaintances are Stuart, a reserved Englishman with strong opinions and an inconvenient ability to appear when Lulu least expects him, and Edward Morgan, a charming American whose presence adds another layer of interest to Lulu’s travels.
Lulu has not arrived in Italy looking for romance.
This does not mean romance has agreed to leave her alone.
A Mediterranean Mystery Begins
The story expands beyond Positano when Lulu and Mrs. Dalrymple embark on a cruise through the Greek islands.
Mykonos, Santorini and Corfu provide beautiful backdrops, but the journey becomes increasingly complicated after a disturbing incident aboard the ship. Questions follow Lulu from one port to the next, and seemingly unconnected details begin to suggest a much larger puzzle.
Lulu is not a detective by profession. She is simply observant, curious and unable to accept an explanation that does not make sense.
These qualities are useful in a mystery.
They are less useful when one is meant to be enjoying a holiday.
As Lulu attempts to understand what has happened, she encounters secrets, suspicion and several people whose motives may not be as straightforward as they appear. The trail eventually draws together events aboard the ship, activities in Positano and a mystery that is far closer to home than Lulu initially realizes.
Mystery Without Losing the Pleasure of the Journey
Although The Pink Door of Positano contains intrigue and danger, it is ultimately an escapist historical mystery rather than a dark or graphic story.
The mystery matters, but so do the locations, friendships and quieter moments between clues.
Readers travel with Lulu through waterfront cafés, elegant dinners, bustling ports and sunlit streets. There is time to enjoy the scenery, observe the clothes and linger over conversations in which far more is being said than anyone is willing to admit.
There is also Mrs. Dalrymple, who remains admirably composed even when circumstances suggest that composure may no longer be the most practical response.
The romantic element develops gradually. Lulu’s relationships with Stuart and Edward form part of the story, but the first book is only the beginning of a much longer emotional journey.
Some romances begin with declarations beneath the moonlight.
Others begin with misunderstandings, interruptions and two people refusing to recognize what everyone else can plainly see.
Opening the First Door
The Pink Door of Positano introduces the central characters and establishes the world of the Doorway Series: glamorous destinations, puzzling events, witty exchanges and a heroine whose holidays rarely proceed according to plan.
The mystery is resolved within the book, while Lulu’s personal journey continues into the next installment.
For readers who love books set in Italy, Mediterranean travel mysteries, vintage settings and slow-burn romance, the pink door is where the adventure begins.
All that remains is to step through it.
